Wizard101: Fish School, Location, XP, and Tank Size Guide

Wizard101 Fishing, Fish School, Location, and Tank Size Guide

Wizard101 released a brand-new feature today in the Test Realm: fishing! With this new activity, you use fish spells to try and catch various kinds of fish in a number of different worlds - Wizard City, Krokotopia, Mooshu, and Grizzleheim.

Other Fishing Guides:

You can do a few things with fish. You can sell them for a small amount of gold, display them in tanks that you buy or craft in your house, or use them for crafting teleport tapestries.

Getting fish can be tricky. Generally, you need to ignore the fish playing with the lure and instead wait until the orb drops completely below the surface, then quickly hit space bar to bring them up! Even if you time it perfectly, you can still lose them, though a Fish Luck Elixir will make things a lot easier on you. I recommend reading Duelist101's guide to it HERE.

Thoughts on Fishing

Wizard101 Fishing, Fish School, Location, and Tank Size Guide Badges
Besides the Owl-Eyed Pike and Fish Sandwich being ridiculously difficult to get, this seems like a great activity. I'm sure it will have some purposes we don't see yet in-game, and has lots of expansion potential.

I love that Wizard is starting to introduce a number of side activities at lower levels. It'll keep players entertained for long periods of time, and allows even high-level players to work toward something. I'm particularly fond of the new badges I've come by.

These are all obtained through various fishing activities (I compiled them on one page), and I suspect there are more to be found. The Journeyman Angler badge is one for reaching Fishing Rank 6. It will change with your rank, and I believe they go up to ten. I cannot figure out what Master Caster is for, however, I've obtained at least one of every single fish in this guide, so it may be for collecting all of the fish.

What's This Guide For?

You can catch any fish with any lure, but there are two benefits to knowing its class. Number one, you can use that class of lure and supposedly have a better chance of successfully catching the fish you're after. Number two, you can use your spell to reveal all fish schools to see if the fish you want even has a chance of being in that location.

I know I am missing some, so please help me out if you have others! The top left circle indicates a rare fish. The bottom left is the class. The bottom right shows which size fish tank you need for it. Special thanks for updated images to: Katie Roseblossom (1 fish) and Jordan (1 fish). Huge thanks to Alura Silverdust for providing the Silver Streak. Thanks to Sophia Lifecaster for 2 XP amounts.

Fish for Quests
Note: Recommended fishing locations are included. These are where the fish are confirmed to be caught. However, you generally have a chance to catch a fish in any part of its world with the correct school spawn, and with several, they come from every world, but still have a recommended location. Experience listed in "First Catch, All Catches After" format. These fish are sorted by order needed in quests.

Which lure do I use? Look at the school first, and then the rank. You should use that rank of that school lure to try and catch that fish.

  5. Does anyone know what type of fishes goes in the large whopper aquarium

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Large tanks are generally for "winged" fish. You also need to catch a very large type of "winged" fish that qualifies as a Whopper. It will have a "fat fish" symbol.

      Delete
    2. LOL It's Fish Not "Fishes"

      Delete
    3. Actually, "fishes" is correct. When you have one, it's a fish. When you have several of that fish, it's fish. But when you have multiple types or species of fish, then it's fishes. To me, that's one of those grammar rules that once you understand, you can break. I'd never use "fishes" myself, even though it's grammatically correct.

      Delete
  6. It'd be nice if you could add a simple key and way to tell how rare those fish are. For example, you said the fish sandwich and owl-eyed pike are incredibly hard to catch- I suppose that could have some sort of red fish symbol of it then.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Those are simply the ones that were very tough for ME to catch. Everyone has their own fish that are difficult. The little symbols in the top right are for rarity. Silver crowns are rare and gold crowns are epic.

    2. Yea i am having so much trouble catching the Krokotopian Eel

    3. I was waiting for a friend to help me in a dungeon in Krok and I see a fishing pond. I decide to catch one fish and I catch a Krokotopian Eel on the first try. I didn't realize how rare it was until now

  7. Does anyone know if you can put more than one fish in an aquarium? Also, if KI reads this, I would like to be able to put sunken pirate ships, coral castles, and plants in the aquariums too.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Just one fish per aquarium. I suspect they'll add larger aquariums and more decorations in the future.

      Delete
    2. It would also be cool to be able to release them like pets in the underwater houses. If KI reads this maybe a crowns item to allow this? Won't happen otherwise.

    Replies
    1. I've found them in Cyclopse, Olde Town, the Commons, and Unicorn Way. Oh, and Triton Ave. I was surprised at how easy such a rare fish is to find. I guess they're easy, as long as you aren't looking for them. I haven't found a Lifeacuda in three days, just because I need two more to finish another tank. I also need three more catfish. No luck. But I did get a Cranky Catfish. It's really cute. Looks just like Grumpy Cat.

  11. So i drained my max char and my level 33 char trying to get the treant fish in unicorn way and had no luck. But i managed to get 2 owl-eyed pikes. This makes no sense to me and i just wanna craft the regular whopper aquarium. Is there any other way to get the treant fish or maybe buy one?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. you are looking at the wrong recipe the treant is for the standard aquarium not the whopper!

      Delete
    2. now recipe takes life cuda instead of treant fish

      Delete
    3. All I wanted was four more Lifeacuda, and I caught six Treant Fish in a row. On Unicorn way. Since then, I've averaged about 3-4 a day. I wish there was a way we could trade. Or buy, since we can sell them.

      Delete
    4. ditto on the buy/sell I need like 200 more frost dekoi in order to make as many fish tanks as I want and I keep running out of energy. we should at least be able to move fish through bank to other characters we own, since fish are basically a new type of reagent (besides decoration properties) and we can do that with those.

  14. can you catch the cat fish anywhere other than the commons because I can only catch the firecuba and would the catfish be considered a rare fish?

    1. Like another comment different people different luck I've had no problems getting catfish in the commons. Try chasing all the fish away and waiting for the lake to reset, This has worked for me getting treant fish in unicorn way (and I laughed at first about the energy cost of the summon fish spell lol).

      Delete
    2. nope bad idea, you don't use reagents and housing items in battle and fish are used in the same way as those. we want to make good use of fish, not have fishing become the focus of wizard101- in other words it is not Fishing101

      Delete
  22. Another thing to watch is the cancel spell icon in the bottom middle of the screen. It will change to invoke spell when a fish is attracted to your lure. This is more important with the level 5 spells since they have a larger attraction range so the lure is "active" before the fish bites.

    1. Hey! If you have new fish, take a picture of them from your Angler's Tome and send them to swordroll@gmail.com, please! Thanks!

There are currently only two questions. After the bear in Grizzleheim, there aren't any more quests for the time being, but I'm thinking that they plan to expand fishing the future.

    2. Also, when you take a picture from you Angler's Tome, take it of the new fish facing left. Let me know how much experience you got (if you remember) and where you caught it. Thanks again!

    2. Thanks! That is exactly where I found it!!!!! Got a comment though. I am down to 3 fish. Expect ( if I don't throw my laptop across the room out of frustration ) to have them sometime in end of lvl 7 or early lvl 8. What then? I go along with your predictions, I think there will be new lures at lvl 10, but, to get there there will need to be a whole heck of alot of new epoc fish released or we will be resorting to fishing the same ones over and over again for exp of 17 to 20? That would take forever and frankly to monotomous to continue. People would lose interest. Your thoughts?

      Ellie

      Delete
    3. My thoughts? Fish when and what you want to fish and don't worry about rank. Anything new will be in reach for a lot of people, particularly anyone who has all but three fish. So if you feel like it, run around and check for epic fish every now and then. Catch some Lifecudas to craft tanks. Get the seasonal fish. But other than that, I wouldn't worry about catching thousands of fish to get to be a higher rank unless you just really want to be ahead of the game at a huge time expense. That's my plan, anyway.

      Best of luck!

    1. The birthday fish (the Gobblerfish) is available ALMOST anywhere in Wizard City. Rather than confuse people or leave them to guess, this guide includes a recommended location for fishing each fish. For a lot of the epic ones, that's the only spot. Take rare fish, though. All four rare fish are available anywhere in their world. Some places are just easier than others to find them.

The smaller fish schools, are Fire, Ice, and Life. ~Elizabeth Dragonweaver

    ReplyDelete
  65. There are a couple of tricks I'd recommend to you. First and foremost, finish the most basic fishing quest(s), and then venture to other worlds to catch some of these fish you've never gotten before. This will shift your experience up until you hit rank 6. At this point, you'll want to train Reveal Fish School.

As you are looking for fish, this will be your best friend. Clear out the fish that aren't the school you want. Later on, you'll also be able to do this with a spell, or even separate fish by rank with Dragonspyre spells. Fish out all of the school of the fish you need. Sometimes it will be there, and sometimes it won't. Although these tools are available to you, there's some luck involved.

If you mean the early quests, it's honestly just a shot in the dark. Use the locations here and fish in those spots with the correct school of lure, and hope for the best. As you progress, it will get easier.

In terms of actually catching a fish? The fish will approach a lure and your small fishing panel will change from "Recast" to "Evoke." Don't click it yet! The fish will play with the lure, moving back and forth. Once the lure actually goes under the water, that's when you click (or press spacebar, which is faster) to reel the fish in. Playing with sound is a lot of help there, because there's one sound for teasing you with the lure, and one for when he actually pulls it under the water. Try to watch for these cues and fewer fish will get away. Also, again, make sure you're using the school lure of the fish you are trying to catch.

  66. I couldn't help but notice that your picture for the Rune Fish uses the one for the Owl-Eyed Pike fish instead, while there's no other description for the Owl-Eyed Pike fish itself. If this could be changed and fixed, then that would be great, thanks.

  67. The Rune Fish looks correct to me, but you're right, the Owl-Eyed Pike seems to have gone missing!
